Should I learn to drive manual or automatic driving lessons?
Deciding between learning manual or automatic driving lessons depends on several factors, and there’s no single “right” answer. Here’s a breakdown of both options to help you make an informed choice:
Automatic:
Pros:
- Easier to learn: With only two pedals (brake and accelerator) and no need for clutch control or gear shifting, automatics are generally easier to master, especially for new drivers. This allows you to focus more on road awareness and traffic.
- Reduced stress: The simpler operation can be beneficial for people who find driving stressful. Fewer tasks to manage can lead to a more relaxed and comfortable learning experience.
- Smoother driving experience: Automatic cars often provide a smoother ride as the gear changes happen automatically, which can be advantageous in stop-and-go traffic or tight spaces.
- Future-proofing: The number of automatic cars on the road is steadily increasing, and the trend is expected to continue. Learning automatic could be beneficial for future car choices, especially with the rise of electric and hybrid vehicles, which typically come with automatic transmissions.
Cons:
- Limited selection: In some regions, the selection of used cars might favor manual transmissions, potentially affecting your options when buying a car. But now in due to the large selection of imported cars it is much easier to buy an automatic car and the price of automatic cars has come down.
- Cost: While not always the case, automatic cars can sometimes be slightly more expensive to purchase but with the advent of Hybrid cars, running cost can be much cheaper, compared to manuals.
- Driving restrictions: If you only have an automatic license, you’ll be restricted to driving automatic cars. But must cars now being produced are going to be Hybrid or electric so they will all be automatic anyway.
Manual:
Pros:
- Wider car selection: Learning manual opens up a wider range of car options, both new and used, potentially offering greater flexibility when buying a car.
- Potentially cheaper: Manual cars can sometimes be cheaper to buy compared to automatics.
- Sense of accomplishment: Mastering the coordination of clutch, gear changes, and throttle can be rewarding for some learners.
- Driving any car: With a manual license, you can drive both manual and automatic cars, offering greater flexibility.
Cons:
- More challenging to learn: Coordinating the clutch, gear changes, and throttle can be challenging for new drivers, leading to a steeper learning curve and potentially more time and practice needed.
- Increased stress: The added complexity of manual driving can be stressful for some learners, especially in situations like hills and heavy traffic.
- Less forgiving: Stalling the engine is a common occurrence for new manual drivers, which can be frustrating and delay learning.
- Much harder to Pass the driving test: Passing the driving test is much more difficult in a manual car
Ultimately, the choice between manual and automatic lessons depends on your individual priorities:
- Ease of learning: If you prioritize ease of learning and reducing initial stress, automatic might be the better choice.
- Car preferences: If you envision owning a manual car in the future or want the flexibility to drive both types, then manual lessons might be preferable.
- Budget: Consider the potential cost differences in lessons, car purchase, and maintenance when making your decision. You will most lightly need a lot less lessons in an automatic car, and will pass the driving test much quicker in an automatic car.
We recommend you consider these factors before choosing which type of car suits you.

Great instructor who does a great job teaching you how to drive on the road, not only getting you ready for the test but also driving on the road yourself after you pass. Past first try without any previous driving experience. Highly recommended.

After putting off driving lessons until I was 33, I’m very happy with this school six lessons in! I went from never even driving a car around a car park to driving towns away and back at busy times within a couple of lessons. I thought we would start in a car park but sure all the theory in the world won’t help, only real practice will, as he says every single turn / bend / situation is different and you have to treat it like a muscle memory activity. Feel very safe driving seeing as he has full control of the vehicle from the passenger seat. Non critical but honest and direct. Very happy!
